BMS was started by two college graduates, William McLaren Bristol and John Ripley Myers. They acquired the Clinton Pharmaceuticals company in New York. In 1898, the company was renamed Bristol Myers and Company. After the merger of the company with Squibb in 1989, it was finally named Bristol Myers Squibb.
